This is without a doubt the sweetest, most charming story I have read in a very long time (okay, excepting the Mitford series). It's actually one I've listened to on the iPod, and if you have the chance to do the same I would highly recommend it. Since about half the book is spoken by Iranian immigrants, there is a richness to hearing the accent that doesn't come from the text alone...so I am grateful that I chose to listen to rather than read this one. And it's definitely made me decide to seek out other work by Anne Tyler and other audio books read by the extraordinary Blair Brown.(And for those of you who might choose to listen in the car, you wouldn't have to worry a bit about having it on when the kids are with you. It might even spur some good discussion on cultural differences, friendships, and family unity.)
